Auraria Campus Police Department
	Mission: It is the goal of the Auraria Campus Police Department to provide a safe and secure campus that will allow the academic environment to flourish without fear or intimidation in a manner which recognizes and respects legislative mandates, community preferences, and related sources.  Our fundamental duty is to serve the Auraria Campus Community; safeguard lives and property; to protect the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all persons to liberty, equality and justice.

Who We Are The Auraria Campus Police Department is in charge of the Safety and Security for the Auraria Campus, serving the University of Colorado at Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the Community College of Denver.  Responsibilities of the Department include the protection of life and property, detection of crime, enforcement of laws and regulations, investigations, traffic control and building security. The Campus Police Department employs full-time fully certified, State of Colorado Peace Officers, full-time Dispatchers, full-time Security Officers and Hourly Student Guards. All of our Officers respond to calls for service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  These calls range from serious felonies to parking problems.  Officers are also involved in crime prevention programs, investigations, self-defense programs and special events. Officers conduct foot patrols, bike patrols, directed patrol assignments, and other proactive efforts to be highly visible in the campus community.  We feel that this visibility goes a long way in deterring crime on campus.

Procedures for Applying for the Campus Police Department Career Positions Career positions within the department include Police Officer Intern, Police Officer I, Police Officer II, Police Officer III, Police Communications Intern, Technician, Supervisor, and Security I and II.  We are part of the State of Colorado Personnel System. Police Officer Intern and Police Officer I Police Officer positions respond to a variety of civil matters as well as enforce applicable local, state and federal laws. Requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age.  Applicant must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License and not have acquired more than six (6) points in the last year and/or no more than ten (10) points in the last two years.  No alcohol or hit and run offenses can be on the Motor Vehicle Record. The Police Officer Intern requires POST Certification. The Police Officer I requires POST Certification AND one year of Law Enforcement experience. All positions, require POST Certification.  If you are not POST Certified, you may acquire information here. Forms Required: You must submit a Colorado State Application, the Addendum to the application AND a Auraria Campus Police Personal History Form to the Auraria Human Resources Office. Testing: Auraria’s Human Resources Office will send out letters scheduling applicants for the physical agility (see below) and written exercise (see below).   These examinations are administered on the Auraria campus. Once you have passed both exams, your name will be placed on an eligible list.  The top three scoring applicants will then be referred to the Police Department for consideration.  The eligible list is good for 6 months.  As new vacancies occur, Human Resources will refer names from the established eligible list.  You will be notified by mail of your score and rank on the eligible list. If you are referred to the Auraria Police Department, they will begin a thorough investigation from your Police Personal History Form submitted at the time you applied.  The selection process will include: · Integrity Interview · Polygraph Examination · Fingerprint check · Drug Screen · Police Oral Board · Credit/Civil Check · Drivers History Check After a conditional offer has been made, you will be required to submit to a physical and psychological examination by a doctor or health care facility which is selected or approved by the Auraria Campus Police Department.  Police Communications Intern and Technician These positions are responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency phone lines; utilizing and maintaining a two-way radio system to dispatch and monitor patrol personnel on routine and emergency calls; and operating and maintaining the Colorado and National Crime Information Center computer to provide police personnel with pertinent information. Requirements: For both of these positions, you must possess a High School diploma or GED.  The Intern level requires no experience.  The Technician level requires one year of dispatch experience.  Both positions require rotating shift work.  They also require a background investigation which includes a personal and employment background check as well as a credit and criminal check.   Forms Required: You may apply for either of these positions when they are announced.  At that time, you must submit a Colorado State Application and the Campus Police Personal History Form. Testing: Applicants will be notified regarding the date, time and location of the performance exam (see below).  Once you have passed the required exam, you will be placed on an eligible list.  You will be notified by mail of your score and rank on the eligible list.  The top three scoring applicants are referred to the Police Department for consideration.  As new vacancies occur Human Resources will refer names from the established eligible list.  The eligible list is good for six months. If you are referred to the Auraria Police Department, the investigator will begin a thorough investigation from the Auraria Campus Police Personal History Form you submitted at the time of application.  The selection process will include: · Integrity Interview  · Polygraph Examination · Finger Print Check · Drug Screen · Police Oral Board · Credit/Civil Check After a conditional offer has been made, you will be required to submit to a hearing test and psychological examination by a doctor or health care facility which is selected or approved by the Auraria Campus Police Department. Security I Security Officers are responsible for patrolling campus buildings, parking lots and other campus areas to protect the institution, private and public property from unauthorized usage, fire, theft or disturbance and to enforce institutional rules and regulations. Requirements: Entry level Security I positions require no education or experience. Applicant must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License and not have acquired more than six (6) points in the last year and/or more than ten (10) points in the last two years.  No alcohol or hit and run offenses can be on the Motor Vehicle Record. Exam Process Physical Agility Exam Candidates must complete and pass all phases of the fitness exam to pass the Physical Agility Test. Physical Fitness Standards for Police positions. · One Minute Sit Ups – passing is completing 27 sit ups in one minute. · Maximum Push Ups – passing is completing 18 push ups in one minute. · 1.5 Mile Run – passing is completing the run under 15 minutes and 20 seconds. Written Exercise This written exercise will evaluate the candidate’s knowledge of Law Enforcement Practices and Written Communication Ability.  The written exercise is a report writing exercise.  A panel of experts in the field will evaluate the written exercise. · Passing is 70% or above. Performance Exam - (computerized dispatch system - CRITICALL) This performance exam is performed on a personal computer.  The exam will take approximately one hour.  The factors on which you will be rated on are: · Data Entry · Decision Making · Call Summarization · Character Comparison · Cross Referencing · Prioritization Security Training and Experience Evaluation This examination evaluates candidate on their training and experience in security work.  Candidates rate their level of proficiency on a series of job-related tasks. · The exam is scored and ranked against other candidates in the pool.
