Temporary and Student Hourly Wage

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to establish a range of salaries paid to temporary and/or student hourly employees. This wage policy is not tied to the state classified system. This policy will be reviewed annually in July to verify that base wage salaries are accurate and that the policy is still effective as written.

POLICY/PROCEDURE

The following procedures will be used by all AHEC divisions when filling student and temporary positions.  This policy is not to be construed as the promise of a permanent position.

STUDENT HIRES

It is the intent of the Auraria Higher Education Center to hire students who attend one of the 3 constituent institutions on the Auraria Campus. Student hourly employees may be employed with AHEC as long as they meet the following requirement: enrollment at a Colorado post-secondary education of high school institution (see attached AHEC Student Verification form for specific conditions of enrollment). AHEC has no restrictions on the number of hours a student hourly may work.

TEMPORARY HIRES

Temporary employees may be employed no longer than six (6) months in any 12 month period. AHEC has no restrictions on the number of hours a temporary employee may work. Temporary employees will contribute to PERA, presently at the rate of 10.4% of the employee’s gross earnings, and Medicare tax, presently at the rate of 1 .45%. Divisions/departments are responsible for unemployment compensation with the use of temporary employees.

PAY

In accordance with Federal Minimum Wage requirements, AHEC divisions must hire student and temporary employees at current minimum wage or greater, with a maximum pay rate of $20.00 per hour. Some positions may require paying a salary equal to the labor market rate for specific skills. All pay rates over $20.00 per hour must be justified in writing and signed by the appropriate Division Director.

PAY INCREASES

Employees may be entitled to salary increases based upon an individual’s training, experience, performance, and/or the number of hours they worked within their division. Each department is responsible for developing a policy regarding performance evaluations and pay raises to be applied consistently to student/temporary employees. This policy must be in writing and submitted to AHEC Human Resources to be kept on file.
