Thousands of bicycles come to campus each semester. The majority of riders never have issues. Unfortunately, downtown Denver is a high-crime rate area. There are professional bicycle thieves that look for easy targets on campus. The most important thing that you can do to protect your bike from theft is buy a U-lock. These are steel locks in the shape of a U. U-locks are a little more expensive than traditional locks but are far more difficult to defeat. Traditional “cable locks” are small wires wrapped together. With a pair of bolt cutters, it only takes a few moments to cut through the thickest cable lock. Large chains are also not a good choice even though they seem secure. On the larger chains the padlocks are typically the weak point for the thief to attack. A bicyle is best protected when the frame is locked to the bike rack. Seats and tires should be locked or removed and taken with you.
Be sure to lock your bicycle on campus with a sturdy, secure “U”style lock, as shown here:

Do not use the cable/padlock system that can easily be cut, which often times result in bike theft.
It is critical that you have a record of the serial number, color, make and model of your bicycle. If it is stolen, having the serial number is the only possibility you have in getting it back. If you have homeowners or renters insurance be sure your bicycle is covered under the policy.
