Q. How will the Auraria Campus and the institutions, Community College of Denver (CCD), Metropolitan State College of Denver (Metro State) and the University of Colorado Denver Downtown Denver Campus (UC Denver), be affected by the DNC?

The Auraria Campus, including the Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver Downtown Denver Campus, agreed to cancel all classes during the Democratic National Convention from Saturday, August 23, through Friday, August 29, 2008. To maintain the 16 week academic schedule, the 2008 fall semester began earlier than usual, on Monday, August 11.

Q. When do classes resume?

Classes and the regular semester schedule will resume on Saturday, August 30th.

Q. Will the Auraria Campus be closed during the DNC?

Yes, the Auraria Campus will be closed during the week of August 23-29, except to pre-authorized campus personnel. While classes are suspended, all classroom and other campus facilities will be secured with access restricted to pre-authorized personnel only. No visitors will be allowed into campus buildings during the DNC. No camping or other unauthorized activities will be permitted in any area of the Auraria Campus (POLICY).

Q. Where can I park?

August 23-27, Auraria Campus parking will be limited to pre-authorized personnel only.

On Thursday, August 28, special event campus parking will be available for $20 to the general public in campus parking lots A, B, F, H, I, K, L and W. The Auraria campus parking map can be accessed by clicking here: CAMPUS PARKING MAP.

Q. Will streets around the campus be closed?

AUGUST 24-27: The Auraria Parkway from I-25 to Speer Boulevard will be closed from 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, August 24 through Wednesday, August 27 and will reopen by 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 28. The I-25 ramps to and from the Auraria Parkway will be closed during this time.

AUGUST 25 - 27: Speer Boulevard from I-25 to Lawrence Street (and the I-25 ramp to southbound Speer Boulevard) will be closed from 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 25 through Wednesday, August 27, and will reopen by 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 28. Two lanes of Speer Boulevard in each direction between I-25 and Lawrence Street will be open from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. The I-25 ramp to northbound Speer Boulevard will remain open at all times.

AUGUST 25-27: Bannock Street, between 14th Avenue and Colfax Avenue will be closed August 25 through August 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for the Designated Parade Route staging area. From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the westbound lanes of Colfax Avenue, from Bannock Street to Speer Boulevard will be closed for the Designated Parade Route, as will the southbound lanes of Speer Boulevard, from Colfax Avenue to Larimer Street. The eastbound lanes of Colfax Avenue and the northbound lanes of Speer Boulevard will remain open, but some slowdown in traffic flow is expected.

AUGUST 28: The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close a 5.5 mile portion of Interstate 25 through Denver in preparation for Barack Obama's anticipated nomination acceptance speech at Invesco Field. I-25 will be closed from the interchange with I-70 to the interchange with 6th Avenue starting at approximately 5:30 p.m. The highway will remain closed until the conclusion of the event. Alternate routes are recommended and motorists will still be able to access downtown Denver.

Colfax Avenue will remain open during the morning rush hour, but will be closed from Mariposa Street to Federal Boulevard beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the convention program concludes at Invesco Field on Thursday night. Westbound Colfax Avenue will be detoured to Kalamath Street. Eastbound Colfax will be detoured at southbound Federal Bouldevard. One northbound Federal Boulevard traffic lane from Colfax Avenue to 20th Avenue will close at 9:00 a.m. for the Designated Parade Route and reopen at 3:00 p.m. One northbound lane of Federal Boulevard and all of southbound Federal Boulevard will remain open throughout the parades which conclude at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.

RTD Information: August 24-28
Light Rail: Light rail lines D, F and H which crosses Speer Boulevard at Stout Street will remain open at all times, including the time allocated for parades. All C and E light rail passengers will be required to disembark prior to the Pepsi Center station.
Buses: RTD plans to run normal bus service during the convention, adjusting routes impacted by street closures. RTD will provide information on these adjustments as they are finalized through the RTD website (www.rtd-denver.com) and will be posted on buses and light rail.

Resolution of the Auraria Board adopted on May 21, 2008

RESOLUTION

            WHEREAS, the State of Colorado, by and through the Board of Directors of the Auraria Higher Education Center (the Auraria Board), owns and manages the land, physical plant and facilities of the Center (the Auraria Campus) for the exclusive use and benefit of its constituent institutions—the Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver Downtown Campus; and,

            WHEREAS, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) will take place in Denver, Colorado during the period of August 25-28, 2008, with DNC activities planned at the Pepsi Center and the Colorado Convention Center, adjacent to the Auraria Campus; and,

            WHEREAS, during the DNC, a portion of the Auraria Campus will be within the DNC security perimeter or zone and access to the campus will be limited; and,

            WHEREAS, commitments have been made to the DNC Committee for the use of certain Auraria Campus facilities during the DNC for vehicle parking and security related activities; and,

            WHEREAS, the Auraria Board does not have sufficient employees or other resources to adequately manage and safeguard the Auraria Campus during the DNC, beyond what will be required to meet its commitments to the DNC Committee and the other needs of the campus; and,

            WHEREAS, the constituent institutions have cancelled all classes and other academic and extracurricular activities on the Auraria Campus during the period of August 23-29, 2008; and,

            WHEREAS, the Auraria Board has the duty to operate, maintain and manage the Auraria Campus and the power to promulgate rules and regulations for the safety of students, employees and property located on the Auraria Campus.

            NOW, THEREFORE, it is resolved by the Auraria Board that the Auraria Campus shall be closed to all activities and uses during the period of August 25-29, 2008, except for those activities and uses to which it has committed to the DNC Committee and for campus construction activities.  No other activities, events, exhibits or demonstrations shall be permitted on the Auraria Campus during the period of August 25-29, 2008; and

            It is further resolved that only essential AHEC personnel, essential institutional personnel, authorized DNC personnel, authorized construction workers, and authorized security service personnel shall be permitted access to Auraria Campus buildings and facilities during the period of August 25-29, 2008.
