LARIMER STREET CONSTRUCTION
RTD Stop and Parking Affected

Between May 28, 2013 and June 7, 2013 (dates are approximate and subject to change based on weather and permitting issues), the existing medians in Larimer Street at Speer Boulevard will be removed and a temporary bus turn around will be built east of 12th Street to accommodate RTD bus traffic. The sidewalk along Larimer Street will be closed at various times, but signage will be in place to detour pedestrians. During construction, RTD buses will be allowed to use the existing turn around and the existing bus stop will remain open. Flaggers will be in place to direct traffic.

See Area Image

RTD Bus Stop Impact
Starting on June 10, 2013, the RTD bus stop on Larimer Street next to North Classroom will be moved further east, closer to Speer Boulevard. Signage will be in place to direct bus riders to the temporary pick‐up location. It is expected that RTD will use this temporary turn around until late summer to allow construction of utilities in Larimer Street between 12th and 10th Streets.

Only emergency and service vehicles (including trash/recycling) will be allowed beyond the temporary bus turn around during construction. Larimer will be restricted to one‐lane and will be controlled by flaggers. Regular vehicular traffic will not be allowed in this area.

RTD Access‐a‐Ride Stop 3 (serving North Classroom and PE/Events Center) will also be relocated to the temporary turnaround during construction. Signage will be in place to direct users to the stop.

Construction of various utilities within Larimer Street will begin on approximately June 10, 2013 and is expected to be completed by late summer 2013, but dates are approximate and subject to change.

North Classroom/PE Building Parking Area
In order to reduce the amount of vehicular traffic on Larimer Street, the short term parking area located on 11th Street between the North Classroom and PE/Event Center buildings will be closed starting on May 28, 2013 for the duration of the construction in Larimer Street. There are 20 minute academic loading spaces available on 11th Street between the Science Building and Auraria Library that may be used during this period. These spaces are accessed off of
Speer Boulevard and St. Francis Way. This area will reopen once work on Larimer Street is completed which is anticipated to be in late summer.

The Quick Zone convenience store is closing, as the Auraria Campus Bookstore takes over operations.  The final day for retail sales through Sodexo management will be Sunday May 19.  The store will be closed May 20 through June 9 for renovations and to remove equipment and merchandise.  There will be limited convenience products (snacks and beverages) available in the Auraria Campus Bookstore during the closing.

NEW MONUMENT SIGNAGE COMING TO AURARIA

The Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) along with Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver partnered on a new signage plan for the campus in 2011.  New monument signage is the first element of the overall campus signage plan that is being implemented thanks to the generous support of the Auraria Foundation.

AHEC is excited to announce that the new monument signage will be installed in the coming weeks as the signs are finished.  The new signs will be placed at the following four corners of the campus.  The institutional names will be listed in a different order on each sign based on the street frontage relative to the institution’s neighborhood location:

  1. 7th & Auraria Parkway – this will be the first sign installed
  2. Speer & Auraria Parkway
  3. Colfax and Kalamath
  4. 7th and Colfax
Samples of new monument signage

The signage was designed by ArtHouse Design, based in Denver and the designers for the 14th Street signs in downtown.  The monument signs were fabricated by DaVinci Sign System, Inc. based in Windsor.  The signs are approximately 22 feet tall and will be lit by LED fixtures.  These new signs help further identify the campus and its institutions and strike a more urban and sophisticated tone than the campus’ previous signage.

For questions please contact either Jill Jennings Golich, Campus Planner (303-556-3236, jill.jenningsgolich@ahec.edu) or Mike Turman Director, of Project Management (303-556-2394, mike.turman@ahec.edu).

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING FACADE PROJECT

The Administration Building Facade Project will move into Phase 3 which means the work will shift to the south side of the building on the pie shape precast section of the building.

This work will be accomplished with scissor lifts and boom lifts instead of the extensive scaffolding that was used on the north side of the building.  The area will be fenced off to protect the public and the front entrance will remain open, however a tunnel is being constructed at the main entrance out beyond the work activity to provide protection of users and visitors of the building.

The Administration Building Facade Project is part of the Auraria Deferred Maintenance Program.  This program is a partnership of Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Colorado Denver and the Auraria Higher Education Center. This is an ongoing endeavor to maintain and protect the facilities on the Auraria Campus.

Question regarding this project can be directed to Project Manager, Pete Hagen at 303-556-2209 or by email at pete.hagen@ahec.edu.

B-CYCLE STATION ON THE AURARIA CAMPUS

The Sustainable Campus Program has funded a Denver B-cycle station on the Auraria Campus, located at 9th and Curtis, adjacent to the Curtis Street bike lane.  This station features 10 red bikes and 17 docks, fully powered by the sun.  The station was installed on Friday, March 8, 2013.

Denver B-cycle is managed by Denver Bike Sharing, and Denver is currently home to 51 stations (this will be the 52nd station site) with another 29 stations opening by June 1st. Bike sharing is intended for short trips with bikes that can be returned to any Denver B-cycle station.  B-cycle is not a bike rental – users who keep a bike for longer than 30 minutes will be charged additional fees.

Denver B-cycle users can also buy day passes in increments of 1, 7 or 30 days at the B-cycle Station kiosk.  Users may take an unlimited number of trips during their access.  Usage fees are charged on checkouts longer than 30 minutes.  Visit http://denver.bcycle.com/pricing.aspx for day pass and rate information.

When biking on the Auraria Campus, you are encouraged to wear a bike helmet and be sure that you do not ride a bike in marked pedestrian areas/dismount zones (see attached Campus Bike Map).  For information about biking on campus, including designated bike lanes, visit http://www.ahec.edu/bikes/

The Sustainable Campus Program is a $5.00/student fee with the mission of greening the Auraria Campus.
